The US is currently not the only country to be facing problems with the practice of erectile dysfunction treatment. A study published in theJournal of Sexual Medicinehas revealed that the drug sildenafil, marketed under the brand name Viagra, has an adverse effect profile when used in combination with other medications in order to improve blood flow to the penis.

In the study, the researchers examined data from 7,000 men who have suffered from erectile dysfunction and found that sildenafil was associated with an increase in the risk of death from cardiovascular disease (CVD) following the last year. It is possible that the drug was more effective at improving blood flow to the penis in men who suffer from CVD, rather than the underlying cause of erectile dysfunction.

The study was led by Dr. Richard A. E. Williams, a clinical professor of urology at the University of Pennsylvania, and colleagues. They had examined data from 7,000 men, who suffered from erectile dysfunction and found that the use of sildenafil was associated with an increase in the risk of death from cardiovascular disease. The researchers concluded that the drug “provides a clinically meaningful and safe alternative to currently recommended treatments for erectile dysfunction.”

In addition, the drug was shown to reduce the rate of suicidal thoughts in patients taking the drug. Erectile dysfunction affects one in four men in the US and is the leading cause of death from a sexually transmitted infection in the US. Studies have shown that the drug, sildenafil, may be more effective than conventional treatments in treating erectile dysfunction, but the drug was associated with an increased risk of suicide.

The researchers also analyzed data from 11 studies of patients who suffered from CVD and found that a similar amount of sildenafil was associated with a higher risk of CVD. Sildenafil was also associated with an increased risk of suicide.

This was the first study to directly compare the drug sildenafil and its placebo. The researchers also found that patients who took sildenafil in combination with a placebo were more likely to have a higher incidence of suicidal thoughts. Sildenafil did not affect sexual intercourse, however, the researchers suggested.

In conclusion, sildenafil was associated with an increased risk of CVD, especially in men who have suffered from CVD. Although a lower rate of suicidal thoughts was observed in patients taking sildenafil in combination with a placebo, this was not an expected finding.

The study, published inon July 9, is from the United Kingdom's Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA). The authors concluded that while the drug sildenafil can be used in combination with other ED drugs, it is not recommended as a first-line treatment for ED.

“It's important that people know that sildenafil is safe and effective in treating erectile dysfunction, but it's also a safe and effective alternative for men with ED who have other risk factors for the disease, such as hypertension or diabetes,” they write. “In this study, the drug sildenafil was associated with an increased risk of CVD, particularly in men who have suffered from a CVD event.”

This study was supported by the National Health and Medical Research Council, and the National Health Research Multiplex Program. It is conducted by the Research and Development Office of the MHRA (The University of Manchester Clinical Research Center).
